Experience

I worked for two years in math and writing tutoring my peers in high school. My high school was boarding and very rigorous, so in addition to formal tutoring, many nights of the week consisted of tutoring classmates in classes I'd taken and receiving help myself. During the pandemic, I've taken on two clients, one in high school math and the other in 4th-grade math. I got an 800 in SAT Math and a 700 in SAT Reading and Writing for a super score of 1500. I did not take the ACT. My AP scores are as follows: 5 AP World History, 4 AP US History, 4 AP BC Calculus (COVID Semester), 4 AP Physics C Mechanics (COVID Semester), 4 AP Physics C Electricity and Magnetism (COVID Semester). For those marked as the COVID semester, please keep in mind that testing was digitized and different from the typical tests. I did receive As in the corresponding classes. I completed math through Calculus 3 and Differential Equations in high school though because the classes were cut short due to COVID, I do not consider myself qualified to teach them until I've completed the classes in college as well. I've taken semesters of economics in high school and college alongside an economics-focused independent statistical research project on gentrification in Chicago. I was a top ten debater in the state my last year of high school for Lincoln Douglas Debate; a philosophically driven debate. My approach to writing is thus logically focused. I have a rather thorough knowledge of ethical and political theory due to both debate and a semester of political theory I took. I love tutoring because I believe that everyone has the ability to learn and I think it is a real shame that so many kids for one reason or another aren't learning to their full potential. In most classrooms, there is one pace that keeps a third of the class behind, a third of the class doing well, and a third of the class bored and unengaged. The benefit of tutoring is a tailored pace that can not only teach the topics in a syllabus but expand into interdisciplinary and advanced topics. I love teaching because of the students and in addition, nothing makes one appreciate learning as teaching does. For not only the enrichment of your child but also my desire to share connections within academia, I will always go an extra mile, if not a little bit of a tangent, to help your child both enjoy and understand the subject matter. That can be sharing a study, an article, or a particularly creative mathematical proof. While I am happy to generate a rigorous curriculum if your child is ready for one, my chief goal is that your child can not only become proficient in but appreciate the material. A note: Due to COVID, I am only working remotely. If you are looking for a tutor to begin working remotely and transfer to in-person when the pandemic ends, I'm probably not a good fit for you. I'm unsure of where I will be located after the pandemic, but am certainly open to continuing indefinitely over zoom. Another note: I can't input it in the availability section, but I offer a free first session so you may determine if I am a good fit.

Hobbies

I love to cook. My most recent culinary pursuit was pierogis (potato/cheese and mushroom/sauerkraut). As far as art goes, my favorite media is wheel throwing, though you always end up having way too many pots, each just a little misshapen. Having realized that I am biased against music from the 70s and 80s (likely because of ABBA, the Bee Gees, and one too many poorly timed Come on Eileens), I've recently been trying to appreciate that music more. I've been impressed, but the 60s will always be my favorite musical decade. My favorite band of all time still plays and is called Car Seat Headrest. Big Band Jazz from the 30 and 40s is a little bit of a guilty pleasure. In my free time, I've been catching up on movies (recent favorites include Harold and Maude, Trainspotting, and Parasite). I have been fortunate enough to be able to travel to Europe, China, and the Middle East and look forward to traveling through college and my 20s both because I'm studying international development and investment and for pleasure. My sister has convinced me that Bhutan should be a travel goal. I have a dog named Auggie. He is an affectionate Brittany Spaniel whose love for people would make him a horrendous guard dog.
